BBQ Joy
Or Not!
Anyone else struggle with making BBQs live up to the expectations? Consequently, we don’t actually do them all that often, which probably adds even further pressure, by making it a ‘special event’ when we do.
For me, the sides are far more important than the actual BBQ part of the meal. Although there is a caveat to that, a sausage, I’m never one to turn down a chargrilled sausage! The preparation of said sides takes me longer to do than prepping and cooking an entire roast dinner. It’s the shopping, chopping, pre-cooking rice, pasta, potatoes, mixing of the salad dressings, plus, adding to that, the making of the various marinades for the meat and I just cannot get all that enthusiastic about it.
I also feel that we end up cooking an amount of food that at any other time would last a family of four for a whole weekend. This would be a bonus for leftovers if, big if here, the leftovers were actually edible. Now it may be my husband’s lack of experience of cooking food on the barbie, but leftovers don’t really make the cut in our house, as when re-heated, they are either overcooked bullets or so rubbery that they bounce if dropped. Infuriatingly, despite this, all my prep goes unnoticed and all the praise is hyped on the BBQ Chef.
Ever the optimist, this coming weekend will see us go through the whole song and dance all over again. It just has to be done and, yes, of course, it’s going to rain. So I will suck it up, along with the Rosé. Just pass me a sausage, someone please!
